Marino - Peer Critique of Jocelyn

 Part 1.

Jocelyn - started with a sketch, repetition of immigrants life are always the same, theme. Show how they have to hide their emotions through the piece hence the black and white. Second piece has a message of how communication is not the best between families in Mexico and America, and drew the background around negative space. For the first piece it is charcoal and then edit in photoshop of other photos, and the color scheme. Second one was pastel and photoshop.

Part 2.

Overall both of Jocelyn's pieces are very strong but I think the strongest out of the two is the 1st one of the baby. The first piece has the most interesting composition with the multiple faces and then the babies eyes around the border. It also uses a good amount of light and shade especially with the mixture of black and white and brown. The surface in the piece looks smooth but the gestural lines gives the piece nice textures. With mark-making and line this piece is pretty sufficient with the amount used and the different variations of line from thick to thin. So overall this drawing skill are very evident in this piece.

For the second piece I do think it is weaker than the first piece. It does show light and shade with the blue and black of the background. However since the background is pastel and the people are photoshop there isn't a tone of mark-making and lines except the lines of the clothes line and gates. For me the composition seems like the mother and son are blended in together. The boy is blended in more because of the blue background is incorporated but I wish you could incorporate the mother in more to make it more cohesive. The surface of this piece with the pastel makes it look rough because of the blotchiness of the background and the purple hues stand out more to me. I just wish I could see more from this piece just like you did for the first one. So I do see drawing skills in this piece but I wish they were pushed further.
