Marino Reflection Post

Joe Marino: Topic/Focus: Family. My idea is to paint/draw portraits of family members when they were younger, and incorporate a decade vibe into that certain piece.

There haven't been any changes to my original idea for my sustained investigations. I have kept with my theme of drawing portraits of family members when they were younger, and incorporating a decade vibe into that certain piece.

1. My grandpa senior portrait in 1964 with 60s flowers background (might redo to charcoal)
2. My grandma senior portrait in 1964 with 60s wallpaper (might redo to charcoal)
3. Dual senior portrait of my grandma in 1946 with 1940s wallpaper as her clothing
4. My aunts senior portrait in 1964 with 60s flowers and line pattern, also overlapping gladdys to represent that she grew up in rural pennsylvania
5. My aunts senior portrait in 1968 with a vision board background. The first one in color is supposed to represent a girly girl portrayal of who she was with the clothing and the beautiful women. Then the next layer in black and white is supposed to be a vision board of who she would later become in the 70s, a hippie.

All of these pieces are my family have a representation of a certain decade in each of them. Some are clearer than others.

AP GOALS
1. I want to create even bigger pieces of work
2. I want to have more composition range

I think I have been hitting these goals. Some of my pieces are bigger than what I have done for others. I also have gotten out of my comfort zone and have really been focusing on mixed media instead of just painting or drawing.

  1. Joe, your pieces look great together and there is a sense of cohesion in theme and overall quality. Together these feel like a fun, colorful family tree that capture each individual as well as thoughtful choices about the context of their youth. I also appreciate that you have been experimenting with layers and mixed media as well as using each piece as an opportunity to hone your technical drawing skills and charcoal. I saw your earlier post with a request for feedback about pushing the spatial element even further, almost having a 3D quality to the figures. This may be an interesting next step, and I also wonder if you might consider multiple portraits of the same figure or the introduction of a profile or some other variation of the portrait-or if it is important to you that they all look like yearbook photos. Finally, I think it would be interesting for you to create a final piece with yourself as the subject, capturing what it is like for you living in this moment in history/time.

  2. I think you're hitting those goals too! I've seen you start to create bigger pieces and some that are out of your comfort zone. I can see the evolution through these pieces as you start layering more and experimenting. Good job! :)
