Trusello ASYNCH Scoring AP Portfolios

I think the second and last pieces include some interesting perspective. The angle of the city scene really makes it come to life. With the last piece, the scrunched up bags next to each other add a lot of dimension and make the piece more interesting and less flat. With the first painting, the snake wrapping around the girl's arm also demonstrates proficiency with perspective. The anatomy is a little off but I think it works with the style that she was going for. I appreciate the attention to detail when it comes to the lighting in her bangs and the shading on her fingers.

The artist mentions that the last two pieces bring back memories from her childhood, which is evident through these really saturated colors that provide a contrast between warm and cool. The simple shapes also bring that nostalgic feel to the paintings. The color of the girl's skin in the first painting is very pale, but the other warm, rich colors draw everything together. This artist is great at using color to add life to her work.

Overall, I would give this portfolio a 5 because the artist demonstrates a clear understanding of design and uses color, tone, and perspective to enhance her paintings.

Part 1 Inquiry -
This artist wanted to focus on the violent environment that they grew up in. I would give this portfolio a 3/3 because their inquiry is very well-developed and influences each of the pieces they submitted.

Part 2 Practice, Experimentation, and Revision -
Although I did not include any images of the sketches, they were obviously done in a pretty minimalistic style just like the finished pieces. I enjoy how some pieces were done completely in black and white ink, while others are full of extremely saturated colors. There is definitely differentiation between each piece, the thought processes are evident,

Part 3 Materials, Processes, and Ideas -
Lots of different materials are present: black ink, acrylic paint, charcoal. There are lots of process images that help the artist's ideas along. There is a clear connection between beginning stages of a ballpoint pen sketch and the artist's final work.

Part 4 2D Design Skills -
I love the choice of extremely vibrant colors that are used throughout this portfolio. None of the figures have faces, and their bodies aren't really defined either. They can connect this graffiti-like style to their environment! With the second piece here, the red figures in the middle appear very violent and have weapons, but the green figures off to the side are slouching. I love the chaotic energy that is apparent in this piece, as well as the clear difference between the sections. The two sides are very calm, with blue and hints of red, while the middle section is fully red. This color scheme differentiates the emotions of the figures.
The first piece depicts a mother and father with their baby (in mother's arms). I think it is very interesting how her skirt is disappearing at the bottom. This artist is great at making pieces that exude lots of emotions with simple figures. The textures in the background of the piece are really where a lot of the depth is evident. I think this piece tries to exemplify how hard it is to raise a child around all of this chaos and violence in their area and they do not want their child to have a dangerous upbringing.

I would give this portfolio a 5 as well but for different reasons. Although this artist did not add lots of technical details like shading, they added a lot more meaning and weight to their pieces. Each piece really shows heavy emotion with just simple figures.
