An artwork that inspires me is The Seine at Chatou by Maurice de Vlaminck. When looking at Maurice's works I see that he has found his personal style, having pieces of artwork that have similar aspects relating to fauvism. The bright colors he includes in all of his artworks, including The Seine at Chatou, go beyond the reality, having the sky be green and the trees be red. He has such a variety of brush strokes in this artwork, going from small brush strokes in the water to longer ones for the trees that we can see the texture of the painting even through a photograph. I also see movement created from the brush strokes in the sky, it is as if Maurice gave himself freedom in where the strokes were leading but he also had a structured idea. The value he also gives this artwork is incredible because when he goes dark, he doesn't simply use one color but he does more than one, showing the variety he uses. In conclusion, The Seine At Chatou's use of color, movement, texture, and value inspire me and my artwork.
Two things I want to accomplish/ skills I want to learn in AP Studio this year :
1. I want to learn how to draw more realistically this year in AP Studio because I don't tend to go the realistic route most of the time, but I want to expand my options.
2. I also want to find and learn more about my personal style so that I can showcase it in my portfolio.
This piece is similar to the piece I chose as it is not hyper realistic yet you can easily interpret the scene based on the color choices and brushstrokes Maurice de Vlaminck used. I too really appreciate his use of colors; I am especially fond of the shadows of the boats. The shadows, rather than being painted in black, use light and dark blues, purples, and even reds, creating a more visually interesting experience. I feel like we are going opposite directions in our styles; you want realistic, I want to stray from realism! We can ask each other questions about our contrasting styles so that we can learn from each other's past experiences. What mediums are you most excited to try out this year? Can't wait to see what you create!
