Jocelyn Zavala-Garcia's Sustained Investigation 2

This is my sustained investigation #2, a painting of my great-grandma's house. The meaning behind it is that once someone leaves their home country and immigrates, their life is never the same. When they go back and visit or go back and live in their home country, they bring back every part of their new self. They bring the money they earned to help their family, something positive and vibrant. But that does not cover the fact that they possibly experienced hardships, racism, and were alone for months or year without their families. There is always a dark and bright side to the immigration process. But behind all of this is the person the immigrant once was, which is why I chose to use my old painting with muted colors and then edit on pieces of the new painting I made with brighter and darker colors on top using Photoshop.

  1. Wow! I really love how you used different vibrancies of the colors to express your theme. I really like how some of the colors conflict to convey the hardships you talk about in your explanation. Your style of painting is really expressive and really has a lyrical sense to it.

  2. This is crazy!! The color and contrast are fantastic, and I love how much expression you have by varying your application of paint. Especially in the foreground versus for the inside of the house. This feels super abstract and postmodern which I really like.
