Jenny Saville, Reverse 2002-3
I really love the raw color and realistic expression that is expressed by this piece. I find the intense hues of reds, oranges, and peaches captivating making it difficult for me to look away. Saville's usage of both vibrant light and dark values of colors captivates the viewer, perfectly conveying a sense of vulnerability in the girl. The overall intense fleshy orangey hues of the piece give it a sense of unity and intimacy as it is only her flesh being depicted in this painting. This painting inspires me because of the raw emotion and form that can be felt just by looking at this piece. The brushstrokes on the girl's face in the painting give a sense of movement of the light pouring into the room at sunset and highlight the girl's imperfections, showing an unromanticized view of women. Saville's use of value, color, and form inspire me to branch out more and experiment with my artwork.
Goals for this year
1. This year I would like to win as many Gold Keys as I can and create the best artwork that I can as I was disappointed last year with my result for the one-piece I entered.
2. I want to explore and experiment more with more figurative styles that give off emotion like as seen in this artwork of my inspired artist. I feel like I tend to stay true to detail more and the more realistic route and I would like to exit out of my comfort zone trying new things. I want to become more bold and confident in my use of color and be able to depict deeper emotions on paper/canvas.
Bella, you and I have very similar goals for the year! Let's collaborate this year on emotion within our pieces. We can help each other out by asking each other how we can add more emotion to our pieces, from the colors we choose to the brushstrokes we decide on. I would like to know: why do Gold Keys matter to you and your development as an artist? Also, I love the painting choice! I thought it was a real girl covered in paint (like we did in Mr. Newitt's class)!
